Practical guide
How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT answers?
Start with a public site that can be fetched and understood, answer the exact questions customers ask, support claims with first-hand evidence, and measure actual ChatGPT search results over time. Inclusion and placement are not guaranteed.
1. Make important pages technically eligible
Use normal public HTTPS pages. OpenAI says allowing OAI-SearchBot and its published IP addresses makes content eligible to appear in ChatGPT search. Eligibility never guarantees inclusion or placement. GPTBot controls training preferences separately. ChatGPT-User supports user-requested page visits; allowing it does not determine search inclusion.
Check that desired public pages do not send an accidental noindex directive. Use clear titles, summaries, canonical URLs, and readable main content because they help people and technical tools understand the page; this guide does not claim that a title, meta tag, canonical, or schema field directly affects ChatGPT ranking.
Illustrative robots rules
This example allows OAI-SearchBot to request public content while expressing a separate preference against GPTBot training. Adapt it to your existing robots file. Preserve rules for private, account, checkout, staging, and administrative paths.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
Disallow: /account/
Disallow: /admin/
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
2. Publish a direct, useful answer
Name the customer, problem, service, location, price or process when relevant, and the evidence behind the recommendation. Put the useful answer before a sales pitch. Avoid vague claims written only for search engines.
3. Make business facts easy to verify
Keep your name, services, location, policies, and contact details current across your own pages and reliable public profiles. Structured data can describe these facts, but its presence alone does not prove ranking or inclusion.
4. Measure the right outcome
Technical access, an observed mention, a cited link, a referral visit, and a purchase are different events. OpenAI’s ChatGPT search guidance explains that search responses may include linked sources and that placement is not guaranteed. Its publisher and developer FAQ says referrals from ChatGPT may include utm_source=chatgpt.com; that referral signal is separate from a quoted name or cited page.
A reproducible observation set
- Write three unbranded customer questions before testing. Do not include the business name, domain, or a wording unique to its site.
- Run each prompt twice in fresh ChatGPT search conversations under the same recorded date, mode, location assumptions, and personalization controls: six observations total.
- Record no-search and no-mention outcomes as carefully as positive ones. Save the response and any displayed sources.
- Classify each result separately: a textual mention, a quotation, a linked citation, a referral carrying an attributable source such as
utm_source=chatgpt.com, or a purchase. - Run branded business-name and URL checks separately. They test recognition or fetching, not unbranded discovery.
- Repeat the same six-observation set later. Do not generalize from one response or omit negative results.
5. Improve specific gaps
Fix blocked or confusing pages first. Then strengthen weak answers and verifiable evidence. Recheck the page and repeat the recorded search set after enough time for systems to update.
